1. Category & Country (Where It Comes From)
Every drink belongs to exactly one category, the broad family that decides which specifications, production methods and flavor benchmarks apply. Its country is the country of origin: where the spirit was mashed, distilled and first matured.
Aged in Two Countries?
Some spirits travel. A rum distilled and aged in Barbados, then finished in Cognac casks in France, keeps Barbados as its country. The journey is recorded in the distillery note and the cask fields instead.
2. Region (The Local Address)
A country is often too broad to explain a style. Region narrows it down to a place with its own traditions and climate: Islay, Speyside, Jalisco, Cognac or Kentucky. We store a region on the drink and on its producer, so a distillery and the bottles it makes share the same local address.
How place shows up in the glass is explained in Terroir Influence.
3. The Ownership Chain (Who Made It)
The name on the label is not always the place where the liquid was made. We separate four layers, so a brand, its distillery and the group that owns them can each be analysed on their own.
The "Multiple" Rule
Large blends, macro beers and industrial liqueurs are often made at several sites. Their producer is recorded as Multiple rather than guessing one distillery.
Independent Bottlings
An independent bottler buys casks from a distillery and releases them under its own name. The bottler becomes the brand; the distillery that made the liquid stays the producer.
4. How We Use It
In Explore
Narrow the comparison dashboard by brand and country, and see region and country on every drink card. Brand pages show the parent company and home region behind a portfolio.
In AI Insights
Country is one of the lenses Insights use to find segments, such as rum from one island compared with its category. A drink is linked to an insight when its country matches the targets.
